Much of Matthew Muir’s artwork is heavily influenced by late 1960′s- 70′s popular imagery with subjects that are often elaborate original comic book inspired scenes.

In a similar vein are his bold, minimalist landscapes which are influenced by printmaking and poster art. His landscapes are in the tradition of New Zealand painters of the 1970′s and reflect aspects of ‘kiwiana’- machinery and scenes inspired by the county he grew up in.

These are all acrylic on canvas paintings, almost always in bright primary colours, with a strong emphasis with line and detail.

Other art related projects include complex painted wooden sculptural models, posters, set designs and performance-art installations, sometimes on a very large scale.

Normally there are elements of irony and humor underlying Muir’s paintings, and the landscapes are strongly reminiscent of the island environment where the artist lives
